Ok people, this is getting expensive!
I just bought Adobe Lightroom 2.0 from Amazon. To be fair, I bought it from a dealer on Amazon and I got a nearly half price deal because it comes without the box. Fully there, unregistered, legal, but no box so half price. I can live with that.
Why did I buy it? Well. I have a really old version of Photoshop (and iphoto on my Mac). I only use a third of the features in Photoshop anyway, it doesn’t offer things like tagging, and its more geared towards designers than photographers. So I’ve been looking around.
I have a PC desktop and a Macbook laptop, and I really do use both. This limits the options available. The main contender was Aperture, which is a lovely thing to look at and comes highly recommended by a couple of people I know that use it. But Aperture would only work on my Mac. An upgrade of Photoshop was a possibility, but as I said, I don’t use most of the features and it doesn’t have some things I want. So I’ve gone for Lightroom, which comes with both PC and Mac disks in the same box, and will let you know how it goes.
If you want more information and tutorials on Lightroom: there’s Adobe’s Lightroom site, Luanne Seymour’s blog has a link to Lightroom video tutorials and Mike Lao’s blog has links to tonnes of stuff including NAPPs useful training links
Oh, and update on the homework: I’ve shot headshots of 3 people this morning, have a couple more to go, and thought I was doing quite well. Oh apart from being told by a security guard I wasn’t allowed to take photos against the internal white wall. Luckily he sweetly let me off the hook when he realised there was no building at all visible in the picture – just a head – and even let me keep shooting! Then I found out Tony had 15 willing victims. 15!!! Hmm. I think I will stick with my little pool of 5.
I will post some of the pictures tomorrow or Monday!
I think we should point out that my boss kindly coerced my potential models (and so far I have no photos in the bag). Being a goody two shoes has its advantages.
The Martin Evening book on Lightroom is good if a bit dense at times.
There is a whole 7 hours or so of DVD you can download from http://www.luminous-landscape.com for a small(ish) charge – I can copy a few samples if you are interested
